History

Cavallo Point historical photo

Cavallo Point sits on the ancient land of the Miwok Tribe. In 1775, Captain Juan Manuel de Ayala’s ship, the San Carlos, became one of the first European vessels to enter San Francisco Bay.

Spanish explorers named the rocky point in the area Punta de Caballo, or Horse Point, after the wild horses that roamed the area.

In the late 19th into the 20th century, the land was used for Fort Baker, a U.S. Army Post. Today, Cavallo Point sits within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and is managed as part of the National Park System.
